How My “Busy” Pattern Design Style Came About
I first discovered surface pattern design a few years ago while watching Youtube videos about drawing on my iPad. What started as casual sketching quickly turned into a vital creative outlet. I dove deep into classes and blog posts from other artists.
My first patterns were simple and pretty structured, almost box-like. Pattern design made a lot more sense to me when I learned the diamond method. In my opinion, it’s one of the best ways to create versatile, seamless patterns. Once I perfected my diamond method technique (which I talk more about in my newsletter), my creativity took off.
Not long after, I found myself completely drawn to ditsy floral designs. That love eventually led to the creation of my “busy” pattern template. It all started when I designed four animal-themed patterns…I was so obsessed with how the line work, layout, and colors came together that I knew I’d found my “thing”. From that point on, I kept developing and refining that look into the style you see today.
Side note: Templates are a total game-changer for pattern design. They take the guesswork out of layout design and make creating cohesive patterns so easy. You can check my templates out here
