Behind the Designs: My Storybook Swan Cottagecore Collection

The Inspiration Behind Storybook Swans

What began as an idea to design a collection featuring swans turned into a soft, calm cottagecore collection made to live in a nursery. From delicate swans and hand-drawn wildflowers to versatile blenders, this collection is the perfect mix of whimsy and nostalgia.

A Cottage Nursery Inspired Palette

The 2027 paint colors of the year were just released and I was instantly drawn to Benjamin Moore’s Webster Green. It is a beautiful, earthy green that can be either playful or sophisticated, the perfect accent for a nursery.

The rest of the palette pulls in soft corals, a warm almond neutral, and a light shade of gray-green. Altogether, these colors are soft enough for a nursery but sophisticated enough to grow with a child.

Where It All Began: The Hero Pattern

I chose swans for this hero pattern because of their delicate look and the way they move across a pattern. For a nursery wallpaper, I wanted a soft hero motif that could live on a feature wall or on half walls above wainscoting or board and batten.

Most of my mini collections begin with an idea for wallpaper because I believe it sets the mood for the room. Floating Swans perfectly captures the storybook feel that is meant to live in a nursery.

The Coordinate: Simple, Playful Stripes

Wildflower Stripes is a the most playful design of this mini collection. Here you’ll find hand-drawn flowers tossed over coral pink stripes.

Stripes are having a moment right now, and I often love to play with them in my pattern designs. For those who don’t want a motif-heavy design, Wildflower Stripes is a perfect alternative.

Scaled down, this coordinating print works well on crib sheets, blankets, and other nursery accents.

The Blenders: The Patterns that Pull Everything Together

The Classic Gingham in Webster Green ties the collection together and makes a great accent for curtains, reading chairs, and crib bedding. The color that inspired this entire collection continues to weave through it in this blender.

I decided to finish the collection off with a textured solid that works as a way to add depth to walls with its subtle texture or as an accent where a loud pattern isn’t needed.
